The Return of Hannah Montana

The outfits, the music, the balance of living a double life—Hannah Montana was an obsession for many. After all, she was a normal girl by day, and a superstar by night. First airing in 2006, Hannah Montana became one of Disney Channel’s most iconic TV shows, and a fundamental part of 2000s pop culture. The series revolved around a regular teenage girl, Miley Stewart, navigating life as a high school student while  secretly doubling as an international superstar, Hannah Montana. Episodes covered relatable teenage experiences from boy drama to her social life alongside a massive closet with sparkly clothes that drew the attention of young fashionistas.

Not only was this a hit show, but Miley’s extended beyond the screen. Costumes, soundtracks, concerts, and more spin-off elements of the show arose, making it feel like Hannah Montana was everywhere. It’s a nostalgic pastime that is hard not to relish. However, maybe it isn’t just a thing of the past. Approaching  its 20th anniversary, Hannah Montana is hosting a reunion, and it has just been confirmed that the double-life superstar, herself, Miley Cyrus, will make an appearance.. 

On March 24th, the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary special is set to air on Disney+, featuring the one and only pop star herself. It is said to include never-before-seen footage from the original series along with behind-the-scenes moments. The show originally premiered in the mid 2000s, and grew into a full media franchise. Feature films, albums, concerts, and even costumes were released in relation to the show, allowing fans to enjoy it across multiple Platforms. 

If audience love alone doesn’t have you convinced on the show’s success, the awards certainly should. Since premiering, Hannah Montana has been nominated for 28 awards, winning 21. Among these were Teen Choice Awards in 2008 and Best Family Television Series in 2008 at the Young Artists Awards. As its leading star, Cyrus built an impressive trophy case of her own, winning Outstanding Female Lead two years in a row (2008 and 2009) at the Gracie Allen Awards. Her recognition  even extended overseas, with wins at both the Australian Kids Choice Awards and theUK Kids' Choice awards in 2008.  

With the love it received upon its release, fans are looking forward to Hannah Montana’s 20th reunion—and so is Cyrus. She has consistently expressed gratitude for her fans, and the support they have given her over the years. After being named a Disney Legend at D23 Expo at 31, Cyrus wrote in an Instagram caption, “This award is dedicated to Hannah Montana and all of her fans. You’ve shown me legendary love & loyalty. Forever Grateful.” 

Now, just a few years later, Cyrus is continuing that appreciation, by participating in  the reunion as a way for her to show what Hannah Montana has meant to her. “Hannah Montana will always be a part of who I am. What started as a TV show became a shared experience that shaped my life and the lives of so many fans, and I’ll always be thankful for that connection. The fact that it still means so much to people all these years later is something I’m very proud of. This ‘Hannahversary’ is my way of celebrating and thanking the fans who’ve stood by me for 20 years,” she said. 

Cyrus isn’t the only one grateful for this reunion opportunity. In addition to her and the fans, Disney is also celebrating the milestone, emphasizing the show’s lasting legacy. In a press release, Disney Branded Television President, Ayo Davis stated, “Hannah Montana opened the door for so many fans to dream big, sing loud, and embrace every side of themselves, which is why its legacy continues to shine across generations.” Davis added,“Partnering with Miley on this special is a dream, and we want it to be a love letter to the fans, who remain as passionate today as they were when the series debuted almost 20 years ago.”

This reunion represents 20 years of fashion, fun, relatability, and admiration for generations of fans. It revives a sense of joy and nostalgia not only for those who used to watch the show and continue to watch it, but those who were a part of creating it. The impact of the series extends beyond the screen, solidifying its place as a cultural phenomenon. The announcement of the reunion has transported viewers back to a simpler time, allowing them to  look back at their childhood selves as young adults, truly giving them the best of both worlds.
