The entertainment industry and avid television watchers alike have been devastated by the news of actor James Van Der Beek’s recent passing. Van Der Beek is most well-known for his breakthrough role in Dawson’s Creek which cemented his status as a ‘90s heartthrob and pop culture icon. He passed away on February 11 after battling cancer for a year at 48 years old. Van Der Beek’s legacy as a talented actor will remain, but more importantly, he will  be remembered as a beloved husband, father, and role model.

Van Der Beek began his acting career at the age of 13. After suffering a concussion that prevented him from playing football, he began acting playing Danny Zuko in his school’s production of Grease. For the next three years, Van Der Beek performed in local theater before being cast in the off-Broadway play, Finding the Sun.

While attending college, Van Der Beek had his film debut with a small role in the big production of Billy Hopkins’s I Love You, I Love You Not. After this, Van Der Beek expected his acting career to be done and dedicated his time to school. But everything changed when Van Der Beek auditioned for Dawson’s Creek and booked the lead role.

Audiences were captivated with Van Der Beek because he brought a sense of vulnerability to the screen. Rather than merely being a heartthrob, audiences connected with his representation of a realistic and relatable teenager. To this day, the show is a staple teen drama.

Apart from his renowned acting, he was also a beloved coworker. Joshua Jackson, who played the role of Pacey Witter alongside Van Der Beek in Dawson’s Creek, said in an interview with the LA Times that Van Der Beek stood out from other actors for his confident energy that others, including himself, lacked.

Van Der Beek’s most recent film, titled The Gates, is set to release on March 13, 2026. The director of the film, John Burr, said Van Der Beek always spoke highly of his wife and six kids, and was perpetually curious about the lives of others on set, according to People Magazine. At 46 years old, Van Der Beek was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, but decided to continue acting.

“The greatest thing about work is cancer doesn’t exist between action and cut,” Van Der Beek told TODAY.

Just days before his death, Van Der Beek and his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek renewed their wedding vows surrounded by their close friends and family. Kimberly Van Der Beek shared the news of Van Der Beek’s passing via Instagram, “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend."

The medical bills from Van Der Beek’s cancer left his family with a scarcity of money, so Kimberly is working hard to guarantee education and emotional stability for her children. Her friends created a GoFundMe which raised over one million dollars in less than 24 hours to help the family through this struggle.
