Ever since their appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017,) America fell in love with the couple Zendaya and Tom Holland. Not just because of their private yet public, playful relationship, but because they loved the guessing game. Keeping their relationship under wraps for a while and only offering sneak peeks, the couple drew attention to their obvious yet unofficial connection. Now, even though Zendaya and Tom have been publicly known as a couple for over 5 years, they just can't seem to shake the rumors. Recently, photos were released of the couple’s alleged “secret wedding,” depicting the two getting married in complete secrecy. Although the photos clearly showed the two wedded, fans questioned the legitimacy of the news.

There isn’t an exact timeline or origin that traces the wedding photos, but they began circulating and gaining media attention around mid-March. The photos featured actress Zendaya and actor Tom Holland amongst a floral water-view balcony in wedding attire, popping a bottle of champagne, and even holding up a Spider-Man mask.

Considering the couple's intimate nature, an undisclosed ceremony didn’t seem far-fetched. From the time the two met back in 2016 on the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming, the fans began talking. Audiences followed the couple's relationship for years, picking up on Instagram post captions and even their behavior on the red carpet until the two finally decided to make their relationship public in 2021. Did it come as a shock to fans? Not at all. Yet the thrill of following their timeline kept fans intrigued by their relationship.

With the excitement of the two coming out as a couple in 2021 and keeping up to date on their relationship since then, it seemed like the only thing left audiences were waiting for was for the two to announce the wedding date. So, when photos of the couple's supposed wedding started circulating, the Internet was all over it.

With debates arising on the validity of the photos, Zendaya decided to finally speak out for herself. When she joined Jimmy Kimmel Live! on March 16th, 2026, Kimmel acknowledged the rumors that were taking over the news, to which Zendaya ultimately revealed that the photos were actually AI.

Despite many being able to recognize that the photos were fake, many were also fooled. “I was out and about in real life, and people are like, ‘Oh my god, your wedding photos are really gorgeous’,” Zendaya said, “And I was like, ‘Babe, they’re AI.’ They're not real.”

Not only were fans confused, but the star shared that even people in her personal life were fooled by the images, confused as to why they weren’t invited or even informed about the wedding.

Although the wedding rumors were unfortunately false, Zendaya continued with the bit and used this to draw attention to the upcoming release of her new movie The Drama (2026,) in which she will star alongside Robert Pattinson. During the Kimmel interview, Zendaya shared that she had a video to show the audience to “clear up the confusion.” The video included a short clip from The Drama, with Holland's face obviously photoshopped over Pattinson's, giving the audience a laugh.

Even though there hasn’t actually been a recent pivotal point in the couple's relationship, the photos have put Zendaya and Tom’s love life in the spotlight. Major outlets have gone on to publish pieces about them being Gen Z’s power couple, and various articles have covered the complete timeline of their relationship in light of their “recent news”.

Despite these particular AI wedding photos being harmless, the situation not only brings attention to the couple but also to the prominence of AI in images, popular culture, and media as a whole. As time goes on and technology advances, artificial content is becoming harder and harder to detect and is being incorporated further into the entertainment industry.

This past December, Vogue posted an article covering ways that AI affected popular culture in 2025. The piece included various instances, such as AI being used in Oscar films, podcast hosts cloning their voices, and disturbingly enough, fake images of deceased celebrities.

Not only is AI causes fake news to circulate, it also is creating a social media environment that BBC best describes as “slop”, allowing just about anyone to produce and upload AI videos and images that essentially have no purpose but to feed into “brain rot”, which is the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially as a result of overconsumption of material.

As AI becomes more prominent in all aspects of daily life, people are finding it necessary to be more hypervigilant in the content they consume and choose to believe. In many situations, AI calls into question the integrity of media creation, depleting some aspects of creativity, and can ultimately contribute to the overconsumption of mindless media, as it serves as an outlet that promotes fake news. In Zendaya and Tom Holland’s case, the content was trivial and had no major implications, leaving the couple with nothing but a bit to laugh about and use to help promote Zendaya’s new movie.

Regardless of the scenario, AI isn’t going anywhere, and whether it is used to assist, entertain, or leave us disappointed that one of America’s most beloved couples is still not yet married, it has made its mark in creating a new era of misinformation.
