It’s no secret that Chappell Roan is a very vocal person. Whether it's calling photographers out for yelling at her or fans for intruding on her personal space, the singer is outspoken when it comes to boundaries. While some fans and other celebrities respect that Roan speaks out, arguing that parameters should be set to ensure public figures are comfortable, some argue that Roan's interactions set an unnecessarily aggressive tone rather than a precautionary one.
The conversation surrounding Roan’s behavior began with an interaction with a fan in March. Roan was in Brazil headlining Lollapalooza when an 11-year-old fan, daughter of Brazilian-Italian soccer player Jorginho Frello, passed by Roan’s table at a hotel in São Paulo and was allegedly harassed by Roan’s security.
Frello shared the interaction online, saying that Roan’s security guard approached his wife’s table and began speaking "extremely aggressively.” According to Forbes, Frello stated, “My daughter got super scared and cried a lot,” and concluded it by speaking to Roan, “Without your fans, you would be nobody. And to the fans, she does not deserve your affection.”
The post ultimately went viral, so much so that the popstar chose to respond. Roan uploaded a video to her Instagram story, addressing the situation and apologizing for the interaction.
In the video, Roan explained that no one had bothered her and that she hadn’t seen the aggressive interaction. Nonetheless, Roan apologized on behalf of her security guard and condemned his behavior.
“I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child… It’s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn’t have good intentions,” said Roan.
Considering this isn’t the first time Roan has been in the headlines for the way she handles public exchanges, she further expressed that she does, in fact, show respect for her fans.
“I do not hate people who are fans of my music,” said Roan, “I do not hate children. That is crazy. I’m sorry to the mother and the child, that someone was assuming something… That makes me really sad. You did not deserve that.”
Although the artist did apologize and appeared not to have deliberately known about the situation, she still faced scrutiny. Following the video, Catherine Harding, Frello's wife and the young girl's mother, posted a video questioning why she would surround herself with security with such morals.
“Did she tell him to do it? Again, I don’t know,” said Harding”But at the same time, I think you have a responsibility when you are a celebrity to make sure, I guess, that the people who work for you and act on your behalf are acting on your behalf.”
Many people on social media are also speaking out about how they feel in regards to the situation. One individual doesn’t think the the situation is that serious, posting that, “they’re acting like chappell roan killed her,” while others are condemning her, saying that, “I feel like everyone with a brain could sniff out Chappell Roan being awful from the second she arrived but we were all silenced.”
With a conclusion being made that Chappell wasn’t directly involved with the interaction, it is possible that the debate over Chappell’s demeanor could come to an end. However, this isn’t exactly the first time her encounters have made headlines.
In an article regarding the artist, Page Six recounted the artist’s behavior during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards when she snapped at a photographer, saying, “You shut the **** up” after Roan herself was supposedly told to stop talking herself.
A month later, Roan was reported to have called out another photographer while at Olivia Rodrigo’s “Guts World Tour” movie premiere, where she said,"You were so disrespectful to me at the Grammys” to a photographer, and demanded an apology.
Similarly to how they responded to the São Paulo incident, fans are at a crossroads about whether Roan’s behavior is her simply setting boundaries, or just plain rude.
One interesting article, titled “People Hate Chappell Roan For Her ' Diva Behavior, 'But I’m Here For It,” defends the artist's behavior. In relation to the VMA incident, the article states, “At that point, fans said even they couldn’t defend her anymore. But why is it that the left constantly encourages women to speak up, yet when a woman stands up for herself, she is suddenly labeled a “diva” or “too difficult?”
Public reaction to celebrity encounters can vary widely. While some may be seen as one defending their personal boundaries, others are interpreted in a negative light. Unfortunately, they are brought to the headlines regardless of the celebrity’s intent. Fans will continue to voice their opinions on how Roan handles her public appearances, but one thing remains true: Roan's outspoken nature doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.
